American Musical and Dramatic Academy - New York
New York, NY
Celebrating nearly 50 years as one of America’s premier conservatories for the performing arts, AMDA is recognized throughout the industry for its rich history and tradition of launching some of the most successful careers in theatre, film and television.
Founded in 1964 by Philip H. Burton – the actor and instructor best known for helping launch the career of his adopted son, Richard Burton – AMDA was born with a simple but powerful idea: to create a school run by professional performers, for performers. Emerging from the vibrant arts scene of 1960s Manhattan, the school quickly established itself as an integral part of the New York performing arts community and garnered early support from members of the Broadway theatre elite, such as Sammy Davis Jr., Dina Merrill and Carol Channing.
Campuses available in New York City and Los Angeles. The American Musical and Dramatic Academy is broken into two-programs: a two-year conservatory program with certification (located only in NYC), and a 4-year degree program in pursuit of a BFA (located only in Los Angeles).
The BFA program, based on only the L.A. campus, is designed to provide you with artistic training in acting for stage, film and television, along with the tools needed to prepare for a professional career as an actor. You'll begin performing in front of audiences from your first semester and continue to do so through your final semester.
Enroll as a BFA freshman at the Los Angeles campus and complete the entire program in LA. Want a Manhattan experience? BFA students have the option of spending one semester at the New York campus.
The two-year conservatory program based in NYC trains you for a career as a professional actor, helping you to achieve proficiency in acting for stage and screen.
In the first year, you’ll focus on developing technique with a special emphasis on individual work. In the second year, you’ll apply these acquired techniques as you develop performance and audition pieces.
Throughout this intensive program, you'll also learn how to navigate the industry and take charge of your own career.
